Merely days away from what I consider our most important show to date in one of the most recognized venues in the world, I look back at my 8 yrs creating, writing, playing and loving music....

2001
This is the year where it all began for me. I got a call from my best friend Juan about being the lead singer for his band Main Artery which i accepted. I remember being nervous and afraid in that first rehearsal, where the guys told me ''this will be like your girlfriend'' and it has been that way ever since. I remember being so naive about stuff at the time and my first attemps at writing lyrics. BOY THERE ARE SOME BAD ONES. But eventually... i fell in love.....

MAIN ARTERY
For the next 5 years, this band was my life. The 1st year was just constant rehearsals, we would just write and play covers.. just for the hell of it! I sometimes miss those days, it was like religion for us, every sunday we were at edwards house doing our thing. The live shows were awesome, i evolved my live skills with every new show. We put out one record, A Portraits View, which was a combination of 2 eras of the band musically speaking. In the end i felt Main was veru underrated by people, the only time we truly shined was our record release. Ill never forget those days, i learned everything music wise with these guys and i love them all to death.

THE CHINESE CALENDAR
After main, i really didnt wanna do anything right away, but it was my best friend Fernan who pushed me to do something new. AND WOW! TCC was born. When we won MMMF, it was still to this day to me unbelievable. By now i had perfected my live performance craft, i knew how to make the crowd have a good time and enjoy our stuff. We put out a digital ep called Come On In which we released at Cinema Cafe, which was a full house that night. I learned also how to be sorta a PR guy for the band as well. We started getting recognition from the ''big guys'' in the scene. We also had a lotta drama with Daniel leaving the band. Ill go on record saying that event was both our faults, his and the bands. We were ready to take the next step and go more serious....

CALENDAR
I consider the moment Radi entered the band that we ceased to be TCC and just simply Calendar. It was a different approach, my first attempt at spanish lyrics. We werent afraid to experiment... these songs til this day ive said have been the best songs weve ever done. We played ALOT live too! Quintana bar will always have found memories for me at this time. Right now weve... or maybe i should say I have had troubles with Radi with his recent leaving. I still dont know how to react to it, there are days i understand completely and there are other days where i do not understand at all... but 2 things are for certain, 1 - hes welcome back if he ever returns, and eve though were mad at eachother lo aprecio mucho. 2 - No matter what, i will not let this band go away, im prepared to do anything for it.

2009 - HARD ROCK CAFE
2009 ive considered it to be the year for us. We shall release the new record in summer and we have an upcoming tour that starts in june. Also this year will be the first time we play outside of DR. The past 2 shows at Bellas Artes and Feria del Libro have been weirdly gratifying, since we are rarely happy by how we play live. Now finally this tuesday, i realize something ive wanted to do for a while, play a gig at Hard Rock Cafe. Growing up, there was this special on mtv2 called Live @ the hard rock, where ive seen the likes of AFI, John Mayer, etc play this venue and truly the shows are always magical. Ive always dreamt of playing a HRC. When they opened their doors in Sto Dgo, i thought of the possibility right away. It took a while, and i even lost hope, but finally were doing it, it will be an exciting and emotional night for me, my family and girlfriend will be at my side that night. We will be playing with bands, some new, some old, who we trully admire and respect in the DR scene. This night i know will be special for me.. i wish some ppl dear to my heart were there with me, like my uncles Henry and Joel, who always support me, my father, who even though doesnt show it, hes happy for me big time and finally, i wish Radi were here also to be on stage with us, cause i know deep down inside, he WANTS to be here with us.

gracias a dios, se me cumple un sueño that ive had for a long time, even though we fight and bicker sometimes, theres no doubt that love doing what we do... and this tuesday at HRC, the lights will never be brighter.....

messed up title for this post

these days ive been watchin a lot of DBZ on youtube, reminds me of when i was 14 i would record every single episode on VHS. i use to have all 291 eps. big fan of this series, Akira Toriyama is the shizzy.

on sunday we finished recording Rayas Rojas, we did everything so quickly and at the top of our game i felt so proud of the boys and myself, aldo should have the single ready thursday so we´ll see how it turns out......

this week is the 1st of 2 quintana gigs and the weezer tribute. its gonna be a rockin weekend..............

i drank 2 cokes and a red bull. im awake at 3:30am, i aint sleepin anytime soon jajajajjaja.

on aim talkin with radi, i kant wait for next year to actually do the whole calendar thing out there with him, i know it wont be a noche a la mañana thing, but i have a really good feeeling about it.

relationship wise, dont wanna get attached to know one right now. i see it as an obstacle for next year. im just having fun kissing and cuddling jajajjaja.

weezer tributes goin good, but there are a lotta things we need to work out. this week we shall do it. the thing i love about these tributes (weezer being my third one) is to be able to play with other musicians that u either have just gotten to know or have known for a long time, that uve always wanted to play with. ive always wanted to play with paul, jimmy, charicha, monini, jv and melaza, same feeling i had with the foo tribute with miguel neutral and eduardo. really enjoy to be able to do that and be friends with these guys and have tons of fun. thats what its all about.

i keep thinking that the new chinese songs are the best things ive ever done as a musician, hopefully yall will feel the same way, we got a show coming up the 25th with mustache at quintana bar. this place is becoming like the new cinema for us, all or recent shows are happening here. i like the whole vibe to the place, the painting on the stage and what not, really cool shit heres the flyer, the most fun flyer ive ever had, its fuckin david the gnome!!!

missing my grams badly, missing my moms badly. my sis and i are feelin pretty down cuz of this, we cant wait til 8/19 to have her back.

a lot has happened since my last post.....

the chinese calendar had major downs and ups this past month, Daniel is no longer part of the band. i was really hurt at first about this, daniel being like a brother to me. his replacement was even a surprise to me.... Radi!! i never thought id finally have the pleasure of playing with this nigga, its been amazing ever since. we just played at the jaragua for the 2088 msg mag fest and it was off the hook. right now we're working on new shit for a new record.

daniel acted like an ass about this, he doesn't even talk to us anymore. very childish on his part, but right now im all about enjoying life so na.... guatebel.

works good, trying to get that dough in my pocket!

my best bud colas gets in on Friday, cant wait to have him back.

The Past 4 Months

its been a long time, i know....

these past months ive been reflecting alot on life. been super uber busy with the chinese calendar, we've finally put out our first ep titled ''Come On In'', its available digitally at our official website www.thechinesecalendarband.com. the days prior to the show were hectic as fuck! radio interviews, studio listening to the masters, fuckin ppl calling me 24/7. but in the end it was all worth it.... now we got our biggest challenge ahead May 10th @ Jaragua (one of the biggest venues in DR. things are looking good for us indeed.

my grams is doin ok, complaining as always but thats how she is. my sis is great, amazing that shes 17 and has a boyfriend, makes me feel old as fuck. got a better relationship with my dad is gettin better, we'll see this summer when everyone leaves and i get to stay with him. im driving now, finally!!! jejeje i need to get my license.

we're almost at the beginning of December and theres no more releases to look forward to so, its already safe to say in no particular order.....

my number 1 for the whole year, this a great follow-up to 2004's Futures. They co-produced this album with Butch Vig (nirvana producer and garbage drummer)and went back to their Bleed American sound, the vocals in this album masterfully pulled off by Jim Adkins. the titled track is amazing.

very different from Silent Alarm in my opinion, the music goes very way with the title, i can just picture myself at 3am on my way home listening to Waiting For The 7.18 or On or Sunday. pretty pretty good stuff.

getting out of rocknroll for a lil sec here, Calle 13's sophomore album amazed me, many ppl expected them to keep goin with the reggaeton sound, but they went a whole different direction. this album contains latin hip hop at its total best. Residente is a great lyricist. they had a bad ass show in DR this year too.

its been a long time, and i truly mean A LONG TIME! since ive enjoyed an entire merengue album. Juan Luis never dissapoints in this record, he had me worried with his christian album (not cuz its christian, because i felt it was too easy for him). Como Yo is a classic merengue track a cant get enough of and A La Vera is him at his best. also winner of a shit load of latin grammys.

kanye kanye kanye jejejejjeje, contrversial??? always! this album is truly a graduation album, here u can see him take his place in the hip hop kingdom, jay look out! :p Good Morning is amazing.

robi always amazes me, in my opinion its his best work yet. Te Fumare and Roto Por Ti are jewels in this record.

jajajaj the pay what u want for it record! radiohead shocked the industry this year by doing what they did. musically, its no OK Computer, but its a great album. these guys have been in a league of their own for a long time. House Of Cards is a track that takes me places....

i have always admired Thrice for not being afraid to step out of the box, The Alchemy Index is a good example of that. fire didnt bust my bubble that much(although the messenger is the shizzy :p) but water is beautiful, the whaler just gives u that moody feeling of letting go. cant wait for sparing for vols. 3 and 4.

punk in 2007 wasnt so bright, this record is the treasure in the trash can. strung is at its best ion songs like Party in the Hills, All The Nations and War Called Home. Jason Cruz is one of the best frontmen ive seen.

Nick Thomas and the spill canvas deliver in a very good way in their major label debut. a lotta good rock moments in this record, keep a look out for these guys.

i saw the cover and thought dark side of the moon?? jejeej pretty good effort by Dillinger in this record and a good follow up to miss machine. Black Bubblegum is the new metal party song.

miss leslie feist. what a talented woman. what a great album. really enjoy her music, 1234 and Brandy Alexander are such sweet tunes.

circa's sophomore album is a good album to have this year. ive said it b4 and ill say it again, Anthony Green is amazing and thank god he left Saosin.

well last week we oficially started work on our debut EP. it still dont have a name but we're working on it. we tracked the guit guides for 4 songs, we should start tracking drums next weekend. today we rehearsed to finish up work on our latest song. its another spanish tune, im still struggling with the melodies of the song and all, but today at least we finished the entire song as whole instrument wise. el pillo (our engineer/producer) was there today working with us on the songs, hes got some pretty good ideas so we'll see. until next update!

i turned 21, feel older yet the same. my birthday week was good. got to see Zoe and Calle 13, played a show and we went number 1 in la x. not bad huh.

chinese is doing pretty good, been having some probs with they keys and synths, we'll see how thatll turn out. tomorrow we begin recording our debut ep. got no title yet, im thinking to just leave it self titled. we got a new song which rocks, its in spanish, up til now its called 6 Horas (working title) but all good.

finally got a pc, been updating myself with new albums, a lotta good shit so far.

i first saw this phrase back in the movie That Thing You Do directed by Tom Hanks, where the main carachter would say this in moments where he felt confident, cocky or proud. afterwards i then saw the Spartacus movie, there it had a meaning of freedom and salvage.

i first wanted to use it for a main artery song, where it just be brute, hardcore, destructive type of song, but we never got around to it and we had split. When The Chinese Calendar came along i wanted to reenvent this idea with a straight up rocknroll type of song, where the lyrix speak of enjoying the moment on stage, standing tall musically and not takin crap by nobody.

This is my on satge personality that had no name. this is the other me ive always expressed in shows and whatnot. now this person become one with my real self. thats right kids....... I AM SPARTACUS!

well this is my first entry in the blogspot world, i use to have a livejournal but it went bye bye. im jochy, im 20 years old, i study education in english, work as an english teacher and most importantly i am the lead singer of The Chinese Calendar, an up and coming DR band. love my family, love my friends.

the reason im writting a personal blog again is beacause between july 29th and the present day, ive had the worse month in my life, physically, mentally, emotionally and professionally. my gf of 3 months broke up with me, i had probs in the workplace, i had a big problem with another band called kahlo and my ex is seeing another guy and decided to rub it in my face. NOT BAD FOR A MONTH HUH!!!!

well im ready to move on, ready to start over, ready to begin a new life. if ppl ever see this i want them to know that this is a roller coaster that is my life. its good to be able to express my self personally again. lets see what life brings me now..... until next post I AM SPARTICUS!
